The journey to good work: from the police to staffing
29 July 2025 - News
The promise to make good work available for everyone is the common thread in everything we do at Carrière. Every colleague at Carrière follows their own personal journey. The story of Salma, Assistant Payroll & Billing, shows what mutual commitment and engagement mean within our organization. These stories highlight how our people contribute every day to our bigger goal: good work for everyone.
While studying criminology in Poland, Salma also attended the police academy. Not long after, she was working as a young police officer. But life had other plans. She fell in love with a Polish man who lived in the Netherlands, and at the age of 22, she moved to the Netherlands.
First steps as a flex worker
Once in the Netherlands, she started working through franchise location Carrière Leiden as a flex worker at a company in the food sector. “I chose a weekday 9-to-5 job because I wanted to learn Dutch during the weekends,” she explains. With that decision, she laid the foundation for further growth. She spent a year as a flex worker, learned the language, and became familiar with Dutch work culture.
More growth, challenge, and responsibility
Still, the question kept coming back: What do I really want? Through conversations with people around her, it became clear that Salma wanted more. Growth, challenge, and responsibility. “I had a great connection with Carrière. The support was helpful, and the contact was professional but also personal.”
She applied for a recruiter role, but during the interview, something else came to light. She ended up joining the Carrière Service Center as an assistant in the Business Operations department.
She quickly discovered her interest in helping flex workers and working with numbers. She moved into a Payroll & Billing role and is now following an internal development program to grow into the position of Payroll & Billing Advisor. “Personal development is very important to me. I’m curious, I want to understand everything and improve things. And here, I get the space to do that.”

Building on good work together
Her colleague Monika, who works in the same department, also sees her potential: “She has a strong sense of responsibility and learns quickly. You can still see she was once a police officer. She is sharp, analytical, and always thinks in solutions.”
At Carrière, we actively support growth. Not just on paper, but in practice. With guidance, training opportunities, and internal programs like the management or talent track, we create space to discover your potential. At Carrière, people grow into roles that truly fit them.
